The programs are directed for beginners or players who do not quite yet have the skills to play a match. Each pre-play program has an innovative detailed curriculum complete with progressive drills, games, and in the 8-14 age range, skill tests. The Pre-play programs try to maintain a teacher/student ratio of 1:5 to ensure individual attention and quality.

The programs main emphasis is on match play. The travel team meets three times a week. There are three levels: Trident 17 & under, Trident 14 & under, and Novice. BPD is in the Trident Tennis Conference with five other park district and their matches are played on Fridays at 1 pm. The Novice team is for 14 & under students who have two years or less of match play experience. Although students do not need to be great players to be on the Novice team, they still need minimum skills in order to play matches. The Novice team is not involved in a conference and their matches may be on various days and times of the week. Mondays are drill days and Wednesdays are match play days for all three levels.
